Hair Washing
Today we’re talking hair washing basics and tips. It’s something that we’ve been doing since we were little so how can we be doing it wrong? While there's really no right or wrong way to wash your hair, there are definitely some things you can do to make sure you get the most out of your wash days. So let’s get into it!
Number one: Make sure your hair is thoroughly wet before applying any product. Really get in there, move your hair around, separate it, SOAK it. Your shampoo will activate better if your hair is properly wet. If you feel like your hair isn’t lathering enough, add more water before adding more shampoo. As noted in the the first point, shampoo is best activated with water! To save you on product, add a little more
Number two: If you aren’t already using a detoxifying shampoo, you need to get on it. Detoxifying shampoos work different than a clarifying shampoo in that they don’t rough up the cuticle too much and drain your color. It’s no secret that i’m a die hard Kevin Murphy girly so my go to is Maxi.Wash. It uses AHA’s to gently exfoliate all the dirt and grime off or your hair and prep the hair to really absorb the products you use after. It may not lather much for this first wash, but when followed up with your regular shampoo after, you’ll get that nice fluffy lather we all love.
Number three: High quality shampoos don’t require you to use a whole hand full of product t0 get a good wash and lather. With salon quality products, most of the time less is more. Start with about a nickel size amount, and really emulsify it in your hands before applying it too you hair. It’s also best to almost apply it in sections, rather than just plopping it on the top so it will go further.
Number four: This is my most controversial tip that quite frankly a lot of people might disagree with me on, but hear me out. When it comes to conditioner, in my opinion it should be applied scalp to ends. Contradictory to what we always hear because we don’t want greasy hair right? If you are using products that are geared towards you and your hair type, this shouldn’t happen. At then end of the day, your scalp is skin. You wouldn’t wash your face and not use a moisturizer after right? Same thing goes for your scalp! I’ve also always been told that your skin a lot of the time will get oily when its dry to make up for what its lacking and I think that’s 100% true your scalp too. Like I said, controversial and a hard change to make but try it out!
Number five: This is another somewhat controversial one, but I really don’t care if you wash your hair everyday. Do I think that’s best for everyone? No. I think depending on your hair type, the kind of services you get done, etc., there’s of course things you should know, but I also think you should do whatever is going to make you feel good and make you feel beautiful. As a fine hair girl myslef, I know that sometimes I can go 5 days without washing and be fine, and then there’s other periods of time where I feel like I get really greasy day 1 so I wash more frequently. If you color your hair, yes washing more frequently will make your color fade faster so you might need to come in for refreshes more often than someone who washes once a week. Using good products will help, but it’s ultimately inevitable. But if you like washing your hair everyday and it makes you feel pretty, then wash your hair girl! I would just recommend using good, gentle products that are meant four your hair type.
If there’s any other washing tips you’ve picked up along the way please share them with me! I love learning things from my clients and other stylists so we can all have good hair days everyday.
